Restorative Justice

(n.). An approach to justice focused on the needs of the victims, offenders, and involved community.

Restorative justice is a theory of justice designed to focus on harm, with cooperative processes that include many stakeholders. Restorative justice practice can evolve alongside or in place of the traditional punitive approach to wrongdoing. Properly implemented, restorative justice can transform people, relationships, communities, and lead to excellent outcomes. With deep roots in native cultures worldwide, it has become an accepted framework in the past several decades. Much of the emergence of this area in recent decades has been focused on criminal situations, though it has expanded from its formal origins into use in schools, workplaces, and beyond.

This conference brought together over 200 experts, across  to learn about the details of restorative justice, offer opportunities to experience restorative justice practices, and think collectively about how restorative justice can benefit us here in Western NY.

The morning started with Senator Tim Kennedy and Robert Morrisroe, representatiive from Mayor Byron Brown's office.

Keynote Dr. Carolyn Boyes-Watson gave an inspiring speech about restorative cities.

Daniel Kos and Julie Loesch provided informative discussion about mediation and restorative justice.

Steve Sugarman and Kim Connelly provided though provoking conversation about restorative justice and law.

The Community Action and Education Panels allowed participants to have discussion with community and school leaders in changing justice culture.
